BIRDS OF THE WORLD WITH VENT AND CORNELL LAB OF ORNITHOLOGY

About This Webinar

One of the great resources available to birders and the natural history community is the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Birds of the World. From its origins, decades ago, as a massive 16-volume hardbound series, to its maturation into an easily accessed and indispensable online tool, Birds of the World is a triumph of scientific and technological achievement. On the next installment in the VENT Webinar series, we’ll partner with the Cornell Lab for a presentation on Birds of the World and how it can be of value to our travelers. Leading this presentation is a special guest from the Lab, Laura Kammermeier, Business Manager for Birds of the World and a figure well-known in the North American birding community. Laura will deliver a live demonstration of the Birds of the World application, covering a number of topics—what it is, its history, how it is used, and how it works with eBird and the Lab’s Macaulay Library. Joining Laura is VENT COO Barry Lyon, who will demonstrate, through the display of current VENT tour itineraries, concrete examples of how Birds of the World can enhance your knowledge of birds and help prepare you for your next VENT tour.

Birds of the World is a subscription service; at the end of the presentation, we will announce a special discount opportunity exclusive to customers of VENT! Whether traveling with VENT or on your own, Birds of the World is an incomparable resource that will add immense value to your birding adventures. Please join us, Thursday, July 27, for this special presentation.

Business Manager for Birds of the World
Laura is the Business Manager for Birds of the World. She is a birder and is keenly devoted to birds and nature conservation. After completing her Master’s degree in Aquatic Ecology at Kent State University, she developed a broad background in citizen science, business, marketing, and communications in the nature and travel industry. She led two large citizen science projects, including Project FeederWatch in the early 2000s. After that, she built a freelance marketing business that served a broad array of conservation nonprofits and travel companies. She began travel writing in 2008 and had the pleasure of watching birds and meeting birders in a dozen countries - she published in magazines and on her own birding travel website that described the world’s best birding travel hotspots. She returned ‘home’ to the Cornell Lab in 2018 to again serve bird conservation by bringing Birds of the World to a growing network of scientists, birders, nonprofits, and academic libraries around the world. Laura focuses most of her free time at home watching birds and “rewilding” her land back to nature.

Chief Operating Officer
Barry Lyon’s passion for the outdoors and birding has its roots in his childhood in southern California. During his teenage years, he attended several VENT/ABA youth birding camps, which ultimately led to his future involvement with Victor Emanuel Nature Tours. He holds a B.A. from the University of Arizona at Tucson where he studied history and political science, with an emphasis on environment and development politics. Barry joined the VENT team as a tour leader in 1995 and embarked on a travel-based career that has taken him to an array of worldwide destinations.

He has lived in Austin, Texas since 2004 when he joined our office staff as an assistant to company president Victor Emanuel. In 2014 he was named Chief Operating Officer (COO), reflecting his increased experience and responsibilities. These days, his work is geared primarily toward the company’s business side and management, although he continues to lead a few tours annually. Barry’s background and his knowledge of natural history have provided him with a strong interest in conservation. He is a former board member and past president of Travis Audubon Society, which emphasizes conservation through birding and outdoor education for children. Barry resides in South Austin with his wife, Brooke Smith.
