PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: ENTITY SELECTION

Many practitioners adopt a ‘this entity is correct for all businesses’ approach when advising a client on their choice of business entity. This session will discuss considerations in forming an entity including ownership, investors, exit strategy, and retirement plans. Further considerations involving current tax laws and the potential impact of the 2025 TCJA sunset will also be discussed.

Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of taxation of business entities

Learning Objectives:
-Learn how to determine which screening questions should be asked when clients start a new activity
-Determine which entity types won't fit with client goals
-Learn strategies which clients can adopt to provide flexibility as their business grows

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

John Sheeley, EA began his career in the tax industry in 1987, passing the IRS special enrollment exam in 1995. His career includes 13 years as a multi-unit franchisee of a national tax firm and 5 years as a tax manager at a regional CPA firm in New York. A National Tax Practice Institute fellow, John completed his undergraduate education at the State University of New York at Oswego. John formed his current tax services firm in 2008, with a focus on the tax and representation needs of U.S. citizens living abroad, and non‐resident alien entrepreneurs and entertainers living and working in the United States. The Firm prepares the occasional cannabis industry and crypto currency tax return. John is also the founder of Tax Practice Pro, Inc, a national continuing education provider based in Chester, New York.

REFUND POLICY
Refunds will be honored if written notification is received at the Administrative Office within 5 business days of the webinar. A processing fee of $25 will be deducted from the refund. Cancellations within 5 business days of the webinar will not be accepted. Substitutions are allowed if received 48-hours prior to the start of the webinar. "No shows" forfeit their fees.

CANCELLATION
VASEA reserves the right to cancel any program or course for circumstances that are not under direct control of VASEA. If a course or program is cancelled, registrants will be notified via email at the address listed on their registration form.

Patrick Knightly is an enrolled agent in the Richmond, VA area with over twenty years of experience in the accounting and tax fields. Throughout his career, he has worked in the Public, Private, and Non-Profit sectors, and managed a franchise tax office, serving in positions ranging from Accounting Consultant to Chief Financial Officer. He has also made it a point to be involved in service to his community and has served on several local, state and national boards. Currently he is a Senior Accountant at My Tax Pilot in Henrico County, where he spends most of his time working on tax returns for small businesses, small business owners, estates, and trusts, and on accounting projects. In his spare time, he chairs two local government boards, serves as Treasurer of the Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents, Treasurer of The Chesterfield Partnership for Successful Living, and is the Vice Chair for Volunteers of the Dominion Richmond Christmas Parade. He is a Life Member of the Virginia Jaycees, and a Life Member of the Capital District Kiwanis, and is a volunteer reader for Virginia Voice. He studied accounting and finance at Virginia Tech, and also participated in the Sorensen Institute’s Political Leadership Program at the University of Virginia. He lives in Midlothian, Virginia.
