SFFILM is a San Francisco-based nonprofit and SFFILM Awards Night is its big annual fundraiser for local arts education — and has become an increasingly important stop on the road to the Oscars, annually attracting the attendance of dozens of Bay Area-based members of the Academy.

Indeed, excluding Los Angeles and New York, no other region in the world has a higher concentration of Oscar voters.

Given the pandemic, this year's SFFILM Awards Night — set for Dec. 9 — will not be a seated dinner event, as in years past, but rather a dynamic live-streamed presentation.

Close will receive the SFFILM Award for Acting, which will be presented by her Hillbilly costar Amy Adams. And the stars of One Night in Miami will be toasted with the SFFILM Special Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance by Regina King, the Oscar-winning actress for whom One Night in Miami is her feature directorial debut.

The night's other honorees, previously announced, will be The Trial of the Chicago 7 writer/director Aaron Sorkin, who will collect the Kanbar Award for Storytelling from one of his film's standout performers, Sacha Baron Cohen; and Nomadland writer/director Chloe Zhao, who will be presented with the Irving M. Levin Award for Film Direction by one of hers, David Strathairn.

"We're thrilled to honor each of these remarkable artists at SFFILM Awards Night," SFFILM executive director Anne Lai said in a statement. "In celebrating each of them, we hope to inspire our community of film lovers and emerging storytellers while also raising funds for our year-round work to champion independent voices. The creative bravery, vulnerability, and humanity shown by our honorees this year embody the best of cinematic storytelling."
