Teaching Writing in Asia: Addressing a Growing Need

About This Webinar

A talk by Dr Pallavi Narayan. Writing workshops in South and Southeast Asia are still at a nascent stage, and there is a steadily growing requirement for them. With my experience of facilitating workshops on creative non-fiction and academic writing and book publishing over the last thirteen years in India, Singapore and Indonesia, I can confidently attribute much of this lack to the presence of a diversity of languages in the region. While English is a common binding language, each country has a variety of patois, and English may be a writer’s second, third or even fourth language. Through the lockdown, I have been offering well-attending virtual writing workshops and have taught sixty-odd students from all over India, Singapore, Malaysia and Japan. Through the course of the workshops, I have seen some participants rise up to the effort of going beyond what they would consider their scope. This is the perspective I bring from Asia to The Virtual Writing Conference.
