---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We live in a globalised and digital world where interaction is increasingly virtual; we no longer only buy fruits from the local market, or even learn from schools and teachers physically. Companies have expanded across the globe, and design is no longer as straightforward as designing for a single user group.

In this event, we will be discussing designing to bridge cross-cultural boundaries, and why designing for localisation does not work anymore.

Join us for virtual learning, networking and more!

Featuring:

Rachel Liu - Lead Service Designer - Pearson

Chris Thelwell - Director of Product Design - EY Seren

Lindsay Browne - Senior Experience Designer - Adobe

TALKS & DISCUSSIONS

Rachel Liu - Lead Service Designer - Pearson

Rachel has over 10 years of experience in design-thinking, strategy, and international research. In the last five years, she focused on helping individuals, teams, schools, and businesses to adopt a human-centered approach to innovate and shape the future of education. She coaches lifelong skills for young learners at YesFutures, working as an Enterprise Advisor to develop a careers programme with educators and recently a Trustee for Gestalt Centre.

Rachel is currently the Lead Service Designer at Pearson where she is pioneering the first service design practice. Previously, she worked in China where she redesigned educational programmes and services for kids and teens for Chinese, Indonesian and Russian markets for Education First.

Designing to Bridge Cross-Cultural Boundaries

How might we as practitioners and leaders support organisations to remain relevant in an evolving global economy? How can we better design for cultures that are different from our own? Too often, we make assumptions and decisions based on our unconscious (Western) cultural bias - whether it is designing experiences in products, services or building our own teams.

Whilst working on solving complex problems across several markets and overcoming her cultural shock of living in the East, Rachel uncovered a greater need to help organisations bridge the cross-cultural gap. Otherwise, it leads to unintended consequences - for our users and at our workplace. We need to cultivate a growth mindset and design for cultural inclusion. Rachel will share her insights and tools so that you take action to bridge the cross-cultural boundaries in your role to deliver more impact.

Chris Thelwell - Director of Product Design - EY Seren

Chris has been a digital product designer working globally for many years. Juggling award-winning F1 projects, cool Google Chrome apps, with consulting for some of the biggest companies in the world and the occasional European football championship. An outcome focused design leader, Chris specialises in disrupting markets, creating innovative new digital products in regulated industries and building high-performing design teams in Agile software delivery environments within large enterprises, startups and agencies.

Fake Names

Chris will talk about his experience designing the signup process for one of the busiest websites in the world. He’ll share what he learned about one of the biggest assumptions UX designers make every day, how it strips people of their identities, showing that localisation is not relevant in today’s world and why it’s about time we did something about it.

Lindsay Browne - Senior Experience Designer - Adobe

Adobe Spectrum provides components and tools to help product teams work more efficiently and to make Adobe’s applications more cohesive.

Lindsay Browne plans to take you through Adobe Spectrum and its evolution. She’ll share Spectrum’s philosophy, her team’s journey and her involvement, and how they facilitate and implement new ideas from designers across Adobe. She will also share how they use XD in their workflows including a plugin made for sharing out components.
