About This Webinar

Technology is fast-paced and ever-changing. In the current state of our increasingly virtual and technological world, what are the considerations we need to have in order to design more ethically?

In this event we will be discussing applying the same rules we have for kid-tech to adults, creating products that make everyone feel seen, and design ethics for AI.

TALKS & DISCUSSIONS

James Nation - Director of Design & UX - Beano Studios

James has specialised in the ‘kidtech’ industry for over 13 years. Before joining Beano Studios he worked at the kids specialist agency Complete Control and as a freelance UX/UI designer for clients including Aardman Digital and CBBC.

James has led Beano Studio's design team since the 2016 digital transformation of the iconic 82 year old comic and today Beano.com is the fastest-growing kids' website in both the UK and US. He works across UX research, testing & design as part of an agile product team focused on the continuous improvement of Beano.com.

How Best Practice in Kidtech Should Apply to the Grown-Up Web

Kids make up 40% of new internet users with 170,000 going online for the first time every day, yet ‘Kidtech’ was rarely discussed or significantly invested in until recently. But there are signs the digital industry is waking up to the importance of providing safe digital services for the under 13s.

In this talk James will discuss best practice and the ethical considerations implicit in designing digital services for kids. He will outline how Beano.com operates under the principle of privacy first and why this is as relevant to building ‘grown up’ digital products as those aimed at the under 13s.

Chimmy Kalu - Senior Product Designer - WorldRemit

Chimmy Kalu is a product designer who works with companies that put people first, helping them create products that solve real problems. She believes inclusive design practices should be integrated as the baseline since accessibility is a fundamental part of great UX. Having worked as a software engineer for half her career, Chimmy's able to translate user needs, technical limitations and business goals into designs that are accessible, usable and delightful. Over the last decade, Chimmy has worked to help heritage brands like British Airways, Vogue and GQ transform their offerings and deliver pioneering products and experiences for their customers. She now works with startups and entrepreneurs, helping them understand and connect with their user base. When she's not designing products, Chimmy also speaks, writes and teaches about inclusive UX and UI design.

How to Build Inclusive Products!

Accessibility is well documented - WCAG, W3C, Elsevier, The Paciello group and Deque are organisations that have tackled making products accessible over the last 30 years. However, in 2020, around 90% of the web remains inaccessible and we've even created new ecosystems with built in inaccessibility. Chimmy will be sharing not just how to bake accessibility into your product but how to level up and create inclusive digital products that make everyone feel seen.

Dr. Laura Ferrarello - Acting Head of Programme and Design Pathway Leader MRes - Royal College of Art

Dr. Laura Ferrarello is an interdisciplinary researcher and designer which practice aims at developing inter and cross-disciplinary collaborative methodologies fostering inclusive and accessible innovation through culture and technology. With a particular focus on human-to-human-to-AI interactions Laura collaborated with BBC, British Airways, Fujitsu, Lloyd’s Register Foundation, RNLI amongst others to construct design led strategies on ethics, AI, future risks and safety and Future of Work.

Designing Ethics for AI

At the RCA our design activities and decisions raise important ethical questions everyday. We are leading a project to identify issues across various aspects of design and identify the emerging practice and actions that designers can consider and make within an ethical framework. One specific area we will explore in our presentation is AI. With AI increasingly permeating social organisations, institutions and our day-to-day decisions it is important to develop values that can guide the design of products and services automated by AI algorithms. What can a design led approach add to this conversation if deployed as a strategy to generate design-led ethical codes for AI?
