Hear from Kin and Carta’s design team, building the products that you use every day.
Kin + Carta build products and services that make the world work better for billions of people. And that probably includes you. If you’ve ever shopped with Tesco, B&Q or M&S; banked with Santander or NatWest; checked the weather with the Met Office app or bought a car using Cazoo, then you’ve used a product that we’ve designed and built.
We know that the best work is done by diverse and inclusive teams, which is why people are at the heart of our design team. Our core specialisms of Product Design, UX Research, Service Design and Design Operations provide a framework for individuals to make their own mark. And to ensure that’s a positive mark, we’re becoming a certified B Corp, meaning we’re committed to balancing profit with people and the planet.
Join us on Wednesday 30th June to hear from their design team who will show that the power behind all of this, is their culture, and how giving their designers the freedom to make their mark, has helped them to build better products.
Kin + Carta are currently hiring both Experience Designers and Product Designers in London, at almost all levels. Please see our jobs board for our open roles. https://www.kinandcarta.com/en/careers/

The design consultant and their design problems
If you are a Product or UX Designer working at a startup or Product company today, it’s easy to Google advice on anything from UI trends to goal and team building. Little is told however, about what is the life of a design consultant and what are their design problems – what does it take to be a designer for a client in the agency context?
In this talk we’ll cover some common challenges and patterns we have faced when establishing new partnerships with our clients in the timeframe of a discovery. Based on the lessons we've learned, we’ll take a look at how divergent thinking can lead to ambiguity and what you can do to mitigate some of its effects

A Design System isn't a project it's a product
Too often design systems are seen merely as artefacts, rather it should be treated more like a product/service/framework that serves designers, developers, and at it's best your entire organisation. It should make it easier to talk about, and then execute, design at a scale that’s useful to you. In this talk we will look at some of the challenges you will encounter when venturing into the realm of design systems and the steps you can take to make them so much more than simple component libraries or UI kits.

A reflection on what makes a good service designer
A lot has been said about how to design good services - but what makes a good service designer? As the service design discipline matures and grows we are seeing an increased demand for service designers. What does it take to be a service designer? Does a change of title mean you are a service designer? Is the act of designing a service the same as service design? Throughout my career I have held a range of different titles, but always felt and acted as a service designer. In this talk share reflections and lessons learnt on the moments I felt I was doing good service design - and what this might mean for how we better describe our value and role within our organisations, and beyond.

Scaling with soul: How we’re deepening our capabilities without losing what makes our team special
At K+C we talk about our designers being T-shaped: focused on a single aspect design, whilst maintaining an interest in the entire design process. We’ve seen the success of blurring the lines between our roles and encouraging our designers to pursue the things they’re passionate about. As we grow however, we’re taking on more complex challenges that require deeper, more specialist knowledge. Which has presented us with a challenge: how do we scale without losing what makes our team effective? I’ll be talking about how our approach so far has allowed designers of all levels to develop quickly. And about how our PoD model will allow us to specialise and scale without becoming siloed. Those at the start of their career can expect to gain insight into the value of being a design generalist early on. Whereas those leading teams will learn how to provide a framework that uses the passion of individuals to power the development of the whole team.
