Under the proposal, the final round of the Rugby Championship, on December 12, would only see South Africa play Argentina at ANZ Stadium – a match unlikely to draw big crowds without a trans-Tasman clash afterwards. Those teams cannot play on October 31 due to travel and other logistic reasons.

With all four rugby federations agreeing to share the revenue from the competition, the Herald raises the prospect of New Zealand being forced to bear the brunt of any potential costs in changing the date.

But the financial costs of dropping from six double-headers to five could be outweighed by the prospect of a stand-alone Bledisloe clash that would be the third time the Wallabies face the All Blacks in four weekends.

Regardless of the outcome, don’t expect the fight between the administrators to spread onto the field. All Blacks coach Ian Foster said both teams will get ‘stuck into’ the first match on Sunday without thinking of the scheduling conflict.
