The vulnerabilities of existing approaches in handling identity and data are highlighted by numerous data breaches. It is becoming increasingly challenging for companies to ensure secure and trusted digital interactions and manage employee and contractor authorizations, while there is an increasing need for inter- domain trusted communication and cross-organization authorization. Self-Sovereign Identity technology, including Decentralized Identifiers and Verifiable Credentials, can contribute to address many of these issues and to unleash the tremendous economic potential of controlled sharing of data, improving the security, trust, and efficiency of digital transactions, while also supporting user privacy and control. Example applications of these technologies will be illustrated in IoT and Smart Grid access control, secure data sharing, and cybersecurity, and the security of software supply chains.
