LightTools In-Person Training – Santa Clara, CA

October 13-15th, 2026 | 09:00 am to 17:00 pm PT | Santa Clara, CA

Check in: 08:30 a.m.

This training provides a practical, application‑focused introduction to designing, simulating, and analyzing illumination systems using LightTools®. Participants will learn foundational principles of non‑imaging optics and apply them through hands‑on modeling exercises and real‑world examples.

Throughout the course, attendees will build illumination models, define realistic sources and materials, integrate optical components, and evaluate system performance using advanced ray‑tracing techniques. The program balances theory with guided practice to help participants establish efficient and reliable workflows in LightTools.

Training Agenda

LightTools Basics: Cellphone Camera Setup and Simulation

Introduction to LightTools through a guided cellphone lens example. Participants will learn how to set up a basic illumination system. This section includes how to import and add geometry, assign optical scattering characteristics, create sources, run simulations, and interpret initial results.

Stray Light Analysis. Ray Paths, Regions, Filters and Other Controls for Data Analysis

Learn how to collect and analyze important data items for a given simulation. While the data analysis methods are applicable to a broad set of applications, these tools are essential for analyzing the stray light of a system. Topics include Ray Path Analysis, Region Analysis, and Receiver Filters.

Uniform Intensity LED Lamp Design

Modeling and evaluation of a uniform-intensity LED lamp. Topics include LED source definition, optical layout considerations, and techniques for achieving uniform illumination across a target surface.

Modeling and Integrating Components in a Projector System

Learn how to model and integrate optical, mechanical, and illumination components of a projector‑style system, with emphasis on component interaction, alignment strategies, and system‑level evaluation.

Backward and Hybrid Simulation

Explanation and demonstration of backward and hybrid ray tracing methods: when to use them, why they matter, and how they improve efficiency for complex illumination problems.
