Privacy Law Fundamentals (Private Sector)
This interactive workshop with Suzanne Kennedy and Michela Fiorido is designed to provide HR professionals and privacy officers with the tools they need to review their privacy management practices in relation to employment practices. These sessions are focused on the application of British Columbia’s Personal Information Protection Act to the employment relationship, and will include discussion of national, international and emerging privacy principles and best practices.

By the end of the workshops, participants will gain a firm understanding of the fundamentals of the private sector privacy regime under BC PIPA. You will learn:

– Key privacy and access principles, including how to manage the collection, use and disclosure of personal information
– The privacy, human rights, and labour and employment law implications of employee monitoring (including video surveillance, GPS, keystroke technology), background checks and access
– Best practices for remote work arrangements
– How to address and manage privacy breaches
– How to craft privacy policies and manage notifications and consents
– Best practices in relation to record retention practices and deal with privacy impact assessments
– Practical risk management solutions to handle specific challenges in workplace privacy including cloud computing risks

LEARNING FORMAT AND MATERIALS

This course will be completed over two online sessions and will incorporate case studies and hypothetical scenarios to provide participants with the opportunity to apply their learnings. All attendees will be provided access to the presentation for 30 days, along with additional resource materials for on-the-job reference.
