Robert M. Gates examines U.S. leadership on the world stage in his new book, “Exercise of Power: American Failures, Successes and a New Path Forward in the Post-Cold War World” (Knopf), which is uniquely informed by his service as secretary of defense, director of central intelligence, an officer in the Air Force and a member of the National Security Council staff in four administrations. He has served eight presidents from both parties over the course of his career. Currently chancellor of the College of William & Mary, Gates was national president of the Boy Scouts of America from 2014 to 2016 and has served on several corporate boards of directors. In 2018, he became chairman of Eisenhower Fellowships. Gates has also written “A Passion for Leadership” and the bestselling memoir “Duty.”
