Ambassador Susan E. Rice is a distinguished visiting research fellow at American University’s School of International Service; a nonresident, senior fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government; and a contributing opinion writer for the New York Times. Rice was US national security advisor and US permanent representative to the United Nations under President Barack Obama. From 2002–2008, she was a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. Rice was US assistant secretary of state for African affairs from 1997–2001. From 1993–1997, she was special assistant to the president and senior director for African affairs at the National Security Council, as well as director for international organizations and peacekeeping on the National Security Council staff. Rice is a director of Netflix. She received the Award of Commander, the Legion of Honor of France, from French president Francois Hollande (2017).
