Ishmael Beah was born in Sierra Leone, West Africa. He is The New York Times bestselling author of “A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier,” his story of how, at the age of 12, he fled attacking rebels in his homeland. The book has been published in over 30 languages and was nominated for a Quill Award. Time magazine named it one of the top 10 nonfiction books of 2007. His work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine and many other publications. He is a UNICEF Ambassador and Advocate for Children Affected by War and co-founder of the Network of Young People Affected by War. Beah’s recent book is “Little Family” (Riverhead), a novel about young people living at the margins of society, struggling to replace the homes they have lost.
