Sarah M. Broom
Author
Sarah M. Broom describes herself as “a trained journalist and author.” She has published in The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, O: The Oprah Magazine and elsewhere. She began her career as a journalist working in Rhode Island, Texas and Louisiana. In 2016, Broom won the prestigious Whiting Award for Creative Nonfiction, which enabled her to complete her first book, “The Yellow House” (Grove), winner of the 2019 National Book Award for nonfiction. The book is a memoir of the house she grew up in in New Orleans as one of 12 children. Broom has worked extensively for nonprofit organizations, including as executive director of the global nonprofit Village Health Works, which has offices in Burundi and New York.
