Laura Bush, former first lady of the United States, founded the National Book Festival with the Library of Congress in 2001, during her first year in the White House. She has drawn on her passion for reading and experience as a teacher and librarian to become a lifelong advocate for literacy among many other key issues related to education, health and human rights. In addition to serving as an honorary ambassador for the U.N. Literary Decade, Laura Bush hosted the first-ever White House Conference on Global Literacy and founded the statewide Texas Book Festival. She is the bestselling author of the memoir “Spoken From the Heart,” and “Our Great Big Backyard” (HarperCollins) a children’s book written with her daughter Jenna Bush Hager.
