Back-Lit Aspen Painting with Keith Bond
The focus of this workshop is to learn to accurately see the relative values and subtle shifts in color temperature in aspen trees. With this understanding, you will be able to paint aspens in a more convincing way.

    Group Critique
The workshop will begin with a brief critique of student artwork. Register today to submit your work for a critique.
    Value & Light Exercise
Following the critique will be a few brief exercises design to help you see value and light in a simple and straightforward way without all the complexities found in nature. We will first paint a couple of white cylinders in grayscale.
    Reflected Light Exercise
The second exercise will introduce other colored objects to demonstrate how reflected light effects the white cylinders.
    Warm & Cool Lights Exercise
The third exercise will introduce both warm and cool light sources. Through these exercises, you will learn to see more clearly how direct light, indirect light, and reflected light all affect the color temperature and value.
    Aspen Grove Painting Demo
During the remainder of the workshop, I will paint a demo of a grove of aspen trees. I will apply the principles of value and design to create a dynamic composition. I will discuss the importance of drawing and what that means in landscape painting. And of course, I will demonstrate how to fill the painting full of light by applying the lessons learned during the exercises.
Bonus LIFETIME access to workshop recording included.

    Keith Bond
Keith Bond’s peaceful and contemplative oil paintings capture the spirit of the landscape. He prefers unscathed pristine scenes of nature but also delights in ranching/farming scenes that showman living in harmony with nature. Through the painterly application of the paint (an artsy term for visible, juicy brushstrokes), he captures the textures and essence of a location without getting bogged down in unnecessary detail.

If you frequent backcountry hiking trails, you may be lucky enough to stumble upon Keith's painting en Plein air (a fancy French term for “on location”). Feel free to say “Hi” and watch for a few minutes.

Next time you layover in Salt Lake City, plan enough time to take a tour of the Utah State Capitol Building. Within the Senate Chamber, you will have to crook your neck a bit to see 2 large murals that Keith painted. They span the concave transition space between the wall and ceiling (about 30 feet above the floor). The view of the murals is usually more interesting than what is happening on the Senate Floor.
