SAME Environmental COI Webinar: Bio-Electro-Chemical Tools and Their Sustainability in Contaminants Remediation

About This Webinar

This presentation will introduce a novel bio-electro-chemical (BEC) technique that can address the challenge of effective and sustainable cleanup of contaminants in tight geological formations such as clay and silts. BEC leverages the interactions of microbes and electron transfer, and the electrochemical reactions in such processes, to achieve degradation of a variety of contaminants, such as petroleum hydrocarbons, chlorinated solvents, and PFAS. The BEC system produces zero to minimum carbon footprint and eliminates rebound by enhancing mass desorption during the degradation.

This presentation will cover the use of micron-scale carbon suspension injections to overcome low-level hydrocarbons at three sites. Located in environmentally sensitive, limited-access areas, the projects focused on reducing concentrations below NCGWQ standards. Lessons learned in three distinct environments used to modify treatment in real time will be discussed.

Principal Scientist at Advanced Environmental Technologies and Adjunct Professor at the University of Wyoming
Dr. Song Jin is a Principal Scientist at Advanced Environmental Technologies, LLC (Fort Collins, CO) and Adjunct Professor at the University of Wyoming. Song has 25+ years of experience in innovation and implementation of remedial technologies. He is a pioneer and leading practitioner in the niche of bioelectrochemical redox techniques (E-Redox®) for in situ remediation of contaminants (e.g., petroleum, chlorinated solvents, and PFAS), especially in tight formations such as clay and bedrock fractures. He also developed an organic amendment Ginate® for reclaiming organic matter and sequester carbon in soil. Song received his Ph.D. from University of Wyoming. He has published 95+ papers in peer-review journals and 120+ papers in technical conferences and book chapters. He also holds 38 US and international patents.

Senior Geologist
Tracey Tapley joined the Savannah District, South Atlantic Division of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) in June of 2002 as a Geologist. In 2017, Ms. Tapley was promoted to her current position as Senior Geologist. Ms. Tapley’s responsibilities include technical management, and in-house execution of environmental, geotechnical, and embankment drilling projects throughout the southeastern United States.
As part of the Geology, Hydrogeology and HTRW Section she works alongside a team of Geologists, Chemists, Physical Scientists and Drill Crews executing environmental and geotechnical drilling projects throughout the country. Notable projects include overwater drilling for the expansion of Savannah and Jacksonville Harbors, Remedial Investigations at multiple FUDS sites, subsurface investigations of numerous embankment dams and levees throughout the country.
Ms. Tapley has served in the field of Geology for nearly 20 years and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology from Georgia Southern University (2004).

Program Director
Christopher Hook, PE is a remediation technologist and the Army/USACE programs director at Tetra Tech, Inc. He has over 18 years of experience in the investigation and treatment of recalcitrant and emerging contaminants predominantly for Department of Defense and Federal agencies. In addition to being Tetra Tech’s director for Army and USACE programs across their service lines, his current technical work involves technical leadership in the development and application of effective and innovative remedial strategies. Mr. Hook serves as the remediation chair of the SAME Environmental Community of Interest and is a member of the SAME Pittsburgh Post. He received a BS in Environmental Systems Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University.
