Master Class: Planning and Performing a Best-in-Class Charrette for Your Clients

Charrettes have been around for a long time, allowing for a great variety of use of the term and methodology and practice. There are lots of ways that people think about what a charrette is. The National Charrette Institute (NCI) is the only entity in the United States, and possibly the world, that teaches practitioners how to conduct a charrette or improve upon their practice of them. NCI has a very specific definition of what a charrette is and a standard approach for conducting them that incorporates the learnings from over 30 years of experience. This lecture will explore what makes NCI charrettes unique, their evolution, and characteristics that are portable to other types of engagements. In addition, the secret ingredient to successful charrettes will be shared as will new thinking on ways to make them more inclusive. Lastly, as charrettes continue to evolve, we will examine their adaptability and translatability to a variety of new situations and issues.
