PFAS sampling and analytical chemistry can seem like a daunting challenge, considering equipment limitations and evolving analytical methods. Many organizations have issued prohibitions on field equipment out of fear of false positives from PFAS present in the materials used. This presentation will discuss those prohibitions, materials to avoid, and appropriate equipment to be used for PFAS sampling. The most commonly used PFAS analytical method is actually a drinking water method that is not approved by EPA for groundwater or soil. EPA recently issued a draft method for those other media, and DOD has mandated that this new method be used going forward, but only one analytical lab is presently certified for it.
