Dr Rachel Besser BSc MBBS MRCPCH PhD
Rachel is a Consultant paediatrician at Oxford Children’s Hospital and researcher at the University of Oxford, where she leads the T1Early research programme, undertaking work on screening for childhood type 1 diabetes (T1D). Rachel leads a number of initiatives in the UK and Europe on T1D screening and holds senior leadership positions, including as Diabetes officer for the British Society for Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes (BSPED), as Chair of the BSPED Pre-T1D Special Interest group, and co-lead of the NHS England Task & Finish group on T1D screening and Immunotherapy. Vicky Salem is a Senior Clinical Lecturer in Bioengineering at Imperial College London and Honorary Consultant in Diabetes, Endocrinology and Acute Medicine at Charing Cross Hospital. Her research focuses on type 2 diabetes and obesity, with a particular interest in the neuroendocrinology of the gut brain axis and advanced optical imaging platforms to interrogate pancreatic islet function in health and disease.
