pv magazine Webinar | Battery storage – a key resource in the MEA energy transition

About This Webinar

Initiative partner: JinkoSolar

Solar and energy storage go hand in hand. When it comes to deployments, however, solar has gained something of a head start over storage technologies – since batteries were less essential at the initial lower levels of solar and wind installed, and their prices still have a way to go to match the reductions achieved in solar manufacturing in recent years.

Today though, the energy transition has reached a point where the need for storage can no longer be glossed over, and battery installations are expected to see a worldwide boom over the next five years and beyond. While there are certainly other storage technologies in play, the bulk of these installations will be lithium-ion batteries – and these will be required to a versatile set of roles across different regions and market segments.

In the Middle East, for example, some of the world’s largest solar project have been installed, rapidly changing the makeup of regional grids and creating a need for storage to provide balance and response. And in parts of Africa, we see batteries being deployed as the central piece in energy systems serving remote regions with little or no grid coverage, and to provide backup power to businesses worried about a weak grid. These two regions will be the focus of this pv magazine Webinar.

First off, we’ll hear from Jules Smeets, Team Lead for Energy Storage Middle East & Africa at DNV, about the growing prospects for energy storage in these regions and some of the projects the energy consultancy has already worked on. Following on from this, we’ll hear from JinkoSolar – our partner in producing this webinar, and who you may know as a major manufacturer of PV modules – about the company’s expansion into energy storage technology. Mohamed Saady, Technical Service Manager for the Middle East region at JinkoSolar will treat us to a look at the company’s new energy storage solution, now being introduced to markets in the MEA region and beyond.
