Plenary with Amos Paran: Moving in and out of texts: Extensive Reading meets literature

Extensive reading and literature are part of a continuum, a continuum which describes the ways in which we read and, most importantly, enjoy and derive pleasure from what we read. Anyone who reads a novel, a thriller, a detective story, a romance, or any other genre and talks about it to a friend, telling them what they liked or didn’t like about the book has performed an act of literary criticism – even if only a basic one. Our task is to open the gates for our learners to enter a world that they will enjoy. We can then help them develop their critical abilities and their ability to talk about what they have read in general and in detail; in everyday language and the language of literature. In this talk I will discuss tasks that help learners explore the continuum of reading and literary enjoyment, moving in and out of texts.
