Plenary with Patsy Lightbown and Nina Spada: How languages are learned in classroom settings: Three themes

We will focus on three themes that have direct relevance for second and foreign language (L2) teaching: 1) Language and Meaning, 2) Timing and Time, and 3) L1 and L2 in the Classroom. Language and Meaning addresses the importance for language acquisition of instruction that prioritizes meaningful language use without abandoning attention to language form. Timing and Time focuses on how learners’ age interacts with L2 learning in school settings. We will also discuss how concentrating instructional time with older learners can work better than starting earlier and spreading it thin. L1 & L2 in the Classroom examines how students' previously learned language(s) (L1) can support L2 learning, the uses of L1 in classroom L2 teaching/learning, and the importance of supporting continued L1 development. Across the three themes we will discuss some widely held beliefs associated with them and re-examine these beliefs in light of research evidence.
