It has been far from a happy hunting ground for the Wallabies, who backed up a record-breaking win over the All Blacks last year to crash to a 36-0 shutout defeat in Bledisloe II.

The crushing loss was also marred by an incident which saw non-playing members of the Wallabies squad subjected to abuse while projectiles were thrown in their direction.
Eden Park has been a graveyard for the Wallabies but scrumhalf Nic White said the side are fearless as they head into the second game of the series.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, he said there is a key difference between last year’s response in the lead-up to game two and that this time around.

“I think, for one, we’re pretty disappointed with what happened in Wellington,” White said.

“That’s a different reaction right there.”

White could not quite explain the Wallabies’ woes at Eden Park but instead said it often has more to do with the side’s reaction to previous results.

“That’s a good question,” he said when asked about what was behind the team’s 34-year drought at the venue.

“I think the All Blacks will lift to another level. I don’t know how much it has to do with the field and how much it has to do with the result.“I’ve been there a few times after a couple of wins and a draw and I think that’s got as much to do with the reaction of the group as to where we are playing.

“I don’t think it’s going to matter where we play this week. The All Blacks always react after a draw or a loss. We have a lot of guys haven’t played at Eden Park before.

“There’s guys who hadn’t played the All Blacks before.”

While there was plenty of room for positivity out of the draw on the weekend, one key area of concern to reversing the result was the speed of the breakdown.

After 60 minutes, the Wallabies were pinged for 10 penalties while the All Blacks had just five against them, with accuracy and timing in the breakdown area proving costly along with turnovers.

“We’ve spoken about urgency to the breakdown,” White said.

“That will be key this week.

“That alone will solve a lot of problems. Just speed to clear [the breakdown].We were leaving them a fair bit of time and the ball carrier by himself before we’re getting there, and they have threats all across the park that can get on the ball.

“That was an area we didn’t do well and, if we fix that up, we’re starting to see that we’re attacking pretty well.”

It is the lingering disappointment though, of just how close the Wallabies came to emerging victorious on Kiwi soil, that will be all the motivation Dave Rennie’s side need this weekend.

“This group has only come together pretty fresh,” White said.

“It’s been three weeks together and there is a lot of belief in the things we’re doing and that they’ll work.

“We were pretty gutted in the sheds afterwards, knowing that game was there for the taking.

“We didn’t take it.”
