Where to now?
Getting a handle on the direction of inflation and the U.S. economy for the last several months has been more than challenging. The effects of COVID and the follow-on government stimulus response are still clouding the picture of where inflation is and where the economy is headed.
Employment data was surprising for several months, but that appears to be slowing. Inflation looked like it was trending lower until the July data was released putting the FOMC back on notice. Globally, China’s economy is faltering from a property decline that recently saw one of the largest developers file for bankruptcy. OPEC+ led by Saudi Arabia continues to keep a tight leash on crude production, and the war in Ukraine is a constant unknown.
