Lloyd Hoshaw has taught language arts and composition in public high schools for over 20 years. But his study of rhetoric began at age 10 with the careful creation of mixtapes, honing his skills of language selection to attend to an audience, and more recently with crafted playlists to mold his three children’s taste in music. Today, Lloyd teaches at Millard West High School in Omaha, Nebraska, where he established the AP* English Language & Composition course 13 years ago and created the co-taught interdisciplinary AP* Language and AP* United States History course 8 years ago. Along with Matthew Heys, AP* US History, Lloyd co-authored a Teacher’s Guide to use with Conversations in American Literature and America’s History, For the AP* Course published by Bedford/St. Martin’s.

In addition to teaching AP* Language and Composition, Lloyd acts as the English Department Head and teaches Literature & Film as well as two courses in the Millard Education Academy focused on developing future educators.

Stephen Heller is a member of the Communication Arts Department at Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Illinois. A teacher of 33 years, Steve helped introduce AP American Studies, a combined AP English Language and AP US History course, now in its 6th year. We are grateful to Llloyd and Matt for their mentorship here! In addition to serving as a College Board consultant for 21 years (for AP English Language, pre-AP, and English Vertical Teams), Heller’s leadership experiences with AP include work as a Question Leader, Table Leader, and Reader. His six years on the AP English Language and Composition Development Committee included his service as College Board Adviser for AP English Language and Composition. His publications include AP Instructional Materials for W.W. Norton: The Norton Reader (14th edition) and Back to the Lake (3rd edition); Documenting US History (Bedford), and AP English Bound and Entering the Conversation (Peoples). Steve's additional articles may be found in English Journal and The Illinois Bulletin of English. Steve also served as Editor-in-Chief for College Board curriculum modules on "Using Sources" (2007) and "Expanding Definitions of Argument" (2015).

Steve began his teaching career as a Middle school English and history teacher at Morgan Park Academy in Chicago, Illinois. During his 21 years at Stevenson, Heller’s contributions include working with his district’s goal to promote Equity, Race, and Diversity initiatives, interdisciplinary learning opportunities, and vertical articulation. His presentations with Seamus Campion, his co-teacher of AP US History at NCSS and APAC have promoted the work of interdisciplinary learning across AP curricula.
