About the Speakers

Asia Executive Editor, The Lancet, China

Helena Wang was the first China-based editor at The Lancet Group. She joined The Lancet as the Asia Editor in 2010, and became the Asia Executive Editor in 2016. Helena has led multiple editorial projects, including The Lancet-Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences medical conferences, The Lancet China themed issues, The Lancet China relevant Commissions, and The Wakley-Wu Lien Teh Prize. She was also a Council Member of COPE (Committee of Publishing Ethics) from 2016-2019. Helena initially trained to be a medical doctor in Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (China) and obtained her medical degree in 2000. She also obtained a Master’s degree in Pathology and Pathophysiology from Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (China) in 2003, specialising in Alzheimer's disease.

Senior Editor and Diabetes Ambassador, The Lancet, UK

Callam Davidson obtained a BSc in Anatomical Sciences from the University of Manchester (UK) in 2013, and a PhD in Cardiovascular Science from the University of Edinburgh (UK) in 2018. For several years after graduating, he worked in science communication and public engagement. Callam began his editorial career as an Associate Editor at PLOS Medicine in 2021, before joining The Lancet as a Senior Editor in 2023. Callam's clinical interests include diabetes, endocrinology, and mental health. He is also interested in nutritional epidemiology and the commercial determinants of health.

Editor-in-Chief, The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, UK

Marta Koch began her research career at the Porto Oncology Institute (Portugal) in 2000. She was awarded a doctorate degree in biomedical sciences from the University of Leuven (Belgium), and has pursued postdoctoral studies at the University of Leuven (Belgium) and at The Scripps Research Institute (USA). Marta has been a professional editor since joining the journal Cell in 2015. Her editorial experience extended through diverse basic science, translational and clinical research topics. Marta joined The Lancet Group in 2018 as the inaugural Editor-in-Chief of eClinicalMedicine. She has been serving the diabetes and endocrinology communities as Editor-in-Chief of The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology since early 2019.

Editor-in-Chief, The Lancet Regional Health - Southeast Asia, India

Shalini Garg is based in Chennai, India. Shalini completed her doctoral fellowship from Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (India). She has a Master of Public Health from Mahatma Gandhi University (India). Before joining The Lancet Group as the founding Editor-in-Chief of The Lancet Regional Health – Southeast Asia, Shalini worked in academia and publishing for two years.

Deputy Editor, eClinicalMedicine, UK

Having worked at The Lancet Group as a Senior Assistant Editor since 2017, Charlotte Rowbottom joined the eClinicalMedicine team as a Senior Editor in 2022. Prior to this, she worked as a Scientific Editor and Senior Deputy Managing Editor in scientific publishing. Charlotte studied for her BSc in Biomedical Science at the University of Warwick (UK), with an intercalated year at McMaster University (Canada).
