The Impact of Decreasing Density in Classroom and Research Labs

About This Webinar

Lab spaces are facing new challenges with decreasing density for social distancing. The physical structure of classes, with smaller, multiple sections of a larger class, will require more lab time over atypical hours of operation, which in turn impacts the social structure and informal learning component of the class. Research labs have additional concerns, requiring consideration for shared bench and equipment usage and coordination of lab use times around increased distance between lab users, while still allowing opportunities for coordination and collaboration of research activities in the absence of shared lab time. The presentation will review how the historic benchmarks are altered by this new reality, and how we can adjust for effective functioning labs using updated metrics combined with strategies for enforcing social distancing and encouraging responsible personal behaviors in our informal spaces can create enhanced safety within our existing space resources.

Alex Wing is a principal and leader in Stantec’s science and technology group. He combines design expertise with analysis to help clients maximize limited space in the context of high performance facilities. Alex participated in the development of the EPA’s sustainable design guidelines for lab buildings, and his work on sustainable design in laboratories has been presented at a number of conferences. An expert in space utilization, he has led the development of our “programming by analysis” process. This innovative approach combines traditional programming and master planning techniques with visual models of space utilization patterns. Recently, Alex has been working with clients to review available space for how social distancing guidelines will potentially impact space utilization, and making recommendations to maximize their physical resources.
