Keeping active, independent and healthy are essential pre-requisites for enjoying life in later years from mid 60’s and beyond to the full. Sadly, malnutrition, sarcopenia (loss of muscle mass) and dehydration are often not picked up early and are more widespread than often recognised. All three conditions can themselves have further consequences on physical and mental health as ageing continues. In addition, failing cognitive health and increasing BMI in later years are now sometimes seen as the ‘norm’ and not addressed.

In clinical practice, it is often unclear which strategies are suitable and effective to address nutrition issues in older clients. Clients can have multiple health issues and polypharmacy. Older people living independently can have a decreased interest or ability to cook. It can also be hard to influence nutrition provided by social support/service providers.
