Inflammatory Bowel Disease is a complex and potentially life-threatening condition that affects millions of people worldwide. Diet and lifestyle play a crucial role in helping people living with IBD manage their symptoms, support their disease and improve their quality of life, including reducing their risk of malnutrition, complications, hospital visits and could even help reduce their risk of flares. This CPD will help you understand the different types of IBD and disease stages in greater detail and equip you with the latest evidence-based knowledge and practical information you need to safely and effectively support clients with IBD.
This course focuses on bringing clarity to practitioners around the complexities of Inflammatory Bowel Disease including the different types and subtypes, different disease stages and complications and how these all impact the advice we should be giving to IBD clients. Practitioners will learn practical, evidence-based and safe interventions they can use with IBD clients.
Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, namely Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis, are complex relapsing and remitting conditions with clients often being on multiple medications. There is a lot of conflicting misinformation and advice when it comes to diet and IBD online which can often overwhelm practitioners as to what approach to take with IBD clients. This course aims to bring more clarity to practitioners when it comes to IBD and the evidence-based, practical, safe, effective dietary support we can provide clients.
This course will break down the different types of IBD, different disease stages, associated complications and medical treatments you are likely to see clients on and how these all impact whether we can work with a client and if so, what is appropriate in terms of support we can provide clients with IBD.
It will then cover the evidence-based dietary, lifestyle and supplement interventions that may be considered when working with an IBD client.
It will answer questions like:
- How do I decide when I can work with an IBD client and when to refer on?
- What is the best dietary approach to use with IBD clients?
- What are the supplements I may want to consider?
- Should I be testing my IBD clients?
Finally, it will use case studies to bring to life the different sections to enhance learning.
By the end of the recording, you will be able to
• Understand the different types and stages of IBD and why this is fundamental when supporting IBD clients
• Assess which IBD clients to work with and which ones to refer on
• Understand the benefits and limitations of the support we can give IBD clients
• Understand the safe, effective, evidence-based dietary and lifestyle interventions that can be used with IBD clients
• Choose evidence-based, safe supplements with greater confidence
• Avoid giving unsafe and non-IBD specific dietary and supplement advice to IBD clients
