Metabolic syndrome is a term rarely used within the NHS, yet an estimated 1 in 4 adults may be living with this condition—often without even knowing it. This cluster of cardiometabolic imbalances significantly increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and type 2 diabetes, three of the leading causes of poor health and premature death in the UK. This course unpacks the science behind metabolic syndrome and explores its root causes, the key diagnostic criteria, underlying mechanisms, and the latest research on lifestyle and nutritional interventions. Practitioners will gain practical strategies for prevention and management to enhance client outcomes.
This two-day event delves into the complex interplay of conditions defining metabolic syndrome (MetS), exploring its physiological underpinnings, clinical implications, and evidence-based interventions.
Day one sets the stage with a deep dive into the components of MetS—blood sugar regulation, blood pressure, weight, and cholesterol—highlighting their interconnection through inflammation and vascular health. Discussions cover insulin resistance, its impact on cardiovascular function, and its links to dementia, autoimmune conditions, and metabolic flexibility. A session on mitochondrial dysfunction unpacks its critical role in insulin resistance, culminating in a case study to apply these insights and embed learning.
Day two shifts focus to the digestive system’s influence on MetS, examining the pancreas, liver, gallbladder, and microbiome. Clinical applications take centre stage with discussions on continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), functional testing, and the evolving role of GLP-1 medications. The event concludes with practical protocols covering supplements, lifestyle strategies, exercise, and stress management, providing attendees with actionable tools to support clients effectively.
The interconnected nature of metabolic syndrome can be challenging in clinical practice as the pressure to address multiple issues can be overwhelming. This course clarifies the links between the cardiometabolic minefields while highlighting the interplay with other body systems and creating a holistic picture and outlining key drivers. It also addresses the growing use of GLP-1 receptor agonists, helping practitioners navigate them effectively in client care; the use of CGMs in clinical practice and the science on some of the latest ‘popular’ supplements that meet controversy.
Explore the complexities of metabolic syndrome (MetS), from its defining components—blood sugar, blood pressure, weight, and cholesterol—to its underlying drivers like inflammation and insulin resistance. We will cover the physiological connections between MetS, cardiovascular health, and mitochondrial dysfunction as well as the digestive system’s role, clinical monitoring tools, and practical interventions.
By the end of the course
● Understand the interconnected nature of metabolic syndrome and its impact on overall health.
● Identify and address key components of metabolic syndrome with a holistic approach.
● Recognise the digestive system's role in metabolic health and its clinical implications.
● Understand the latest research and impact of GLP-1 weight loss injections, popular supplements and CGMs and their influence on your protocols
● Apply evidence-based strategies to enhance client care and improve outcomes in those with metabolic syndrome.
