Esotouric Presents “13 Uncanny Los Angeles Crimes & Mysteries” webinar

About This Webinar

Join Esotouric, L.A.'s most eclectic sightseeing tour company, for a special Hallowe’en program illuminating a ghastly selection of historic Los Angeles crimes and oddities. These 13 terrible tales were personally selected by true crime historian Kim Cooper to chill your blood for the spooky season.

The presentation includes a healthy blend of obscure and better known cases, with a running Hallowe’en theme exploring the darker side of costumes and candy. You’ll marvel at the posthumous adventures of mummified old west bandit Elmer McCurdy, shudder at the Svengali force of will that triggered the Trick or Treat Killing, learn how one cute costumed San Fernando Valley tot’s death transformed the holiday forever, and investigate Hollywood’s evolving Superman curse. These strange tales will fascinate and haunt you.

Your hosts Kim Cooper and Richard Schave have been leading groups to offbeat Los Angeles landmarks since 2006, when fans of Kim’s 1947project true crime blog demanded she write guided tours of the historic crime scenes they’d been reading about.

Sleuthing out crime scenes and cool vintage signs and buildings with dozens of fellow L.A. lovers proved so much fun that Kim and Richard made a business of it, and Esotouric was born. From their flagship true crime tour The Real Black Dahlia (“a Los Angeles classic” - L.A. Times) to neighborhood jaunts Pasadena Confidential, Weird West Adams and Eastside Babylon, to tours celebrating Raymond Chandler, Charles Bukowski and L.A. Noir, these outings are a must for Angelenos and savvy travelers.

Although Esotouric’s tours are not presently operating due to COVID-19 public health directives, urban explorers can still spend a Saturday afternoon discovering the secret heart of Los Angeles, through the newly launched Esotouric webinar series. These illustrated lectures stream live (starting at noon Los Angeles time), with viewers participating in the lively chat and Q&A session. And the recording of each webinar is available to watch for one full week. After that, webinars become available as part of the Esotouric On-Demand series.

This webinar is an illustrated lecture packed with original research, rare photos and archival material that will expose a secret history of mysterious Los Angeles crimes and mysteries, and help scratch the itch of celebrating that rare Saturday, full moon Hallowe’en without public events. And you'll find the look of an Esotouric webinar is a little different than your standard dry Zoom session, with lively interactive graphics courtesy of the mmhmm app.

After the presentation, Kim and Richard will answer your questions about these cases and their wider true crime research, so get ready to be a part of the show.

Can't join in when the webinar is happening? You'll have access to the full replay for one week.

So, tune in and discover the incredible history of Los Angeles, with the couple whose passion for the city is infectious.

FYI: Immediately upon registering, you will receive a separate, automated email containing the link to join the webinar. The webinar is reliable on all devices, Mac, PC, iOS and Android.

About Esotouric: As undergraduates at UC Santa Cruz, Kim Cooper and Richard Schave inexplicably hated one other on sight. (Perhaps less inexplicably, their academic advisor believed they were soul mates). A chance meeting 18 years later proved much more agreeable. Richard wooed Kim with high level library database access, with which she launched the 1947project true crime blog, highlighting a crime a day from the year of The Black Dahlia and Bugsy Siegel slayings. The popular blog’s readers demanded a tour, and then another. The tour was magical, a hothouse inspiring new ways for the by-then-newlyweds to tell the story of Los Angeles. Esotouric was born in 2007 with a calendar packed with true crime, literary, architecture and rock and roll tours. Ever since, it has provided a platform for promoting historic preservation issues (like the Save the 76 Ball campaign and the landmarking of Charles Bukowski’s bungalow), building a community of urban explorers (including dozens of free talks and tours under the umbrella of LAVA) and digging ever deeper into the secret heart of the city they love.
