Using Microwaves for Materials Measurement

About This Webinar

In this webinar Sonomatic's Microwave Inspection Division Manager, Donald McNicol, will explain how microwaves can be used to non-destructively examine non-metallic and composite materials for manufacturing or service induced defects. A technique used for inspection of deep water pipelines and other composite materials.

Agenda
  • How the move from metallic to non metallic and composite materials has upset the world of inspection
  • How and why microwaves can be used in this application
  • The physical obstacles presented by older generations of VNAs in field inspection
  • How the Copper Mountain Technologies' VNAs simplified and improved inspection performance

Microwave Inspection Division Manager
Donald McNicol is Microwave Inspection Manager for Sonomatic Inc, a multinational specialist NDE service company.

Donald has been involved with the microwave inspection technique since 2004. At that time he integrated a manual microwave inspection system with an automated scanner of his own design to produce the first truly automated system, rugged and reliable enough to support regular field deployment.

Since then he has spent a significant amount of time inspecting composite and non-metallic coatings on pipes such as composite repairs, insulation, insulation field-joints for deep water pipelines as well as composite and plastic piping and joints.

On composite repair systems, he has successfully inspected most, if not all of the commercially available, non-carbon systems and was recognized by the inventor of AquaWrap as the first to be able to provide meaningful inspection of polyurethane based systems.

Donald was certified to company Level lll in 2013 and, as the technique was recognized by ASNT in 2016, he is working towards achieving that qualification.
