CFP® & Co-Founder of Capitol Retirement Strategies, LLC
Even at a young age, Steve Killiany, CFP® understood the importance of saving for the future. In grade-school Steve diligently deposited his lawn mowing money into his savings account. In high school Steve bought his first mutual fund. In college, he was the only summer intern who elected to contribute to the company 401k plan.
Understanding the importance of honest, independent advice, Steve founded Capitol Retirement Strategies along with Dave Murray in February 2010. He is the chief architect of investment and financial plans for their clients. Steve has the unique ability to analyze potentially complex situations and formulate easy to understand strategies for each client. Simply put, Steve’s passion is personal finance. In his spare time, his head is often buried in a financial history book—not exactly pleasure reading for most people. He says, “I want to understand why mistakes have been made historically and how we can avoid repeating them.”
Prior to forming Capitol Retirement Strategies, Steve served as Director of Investment and Financial Planning at West Financial Group. Steve holds the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification, recognizing his commitment to education, ethics and experience in the industry.
Throughout his career Steve has utilized public speaking and education to help consumers learn how to handle all aspects of their financial lives. He has conducted over 200 seminars on financial planning for the public. In addition to co-hosting “Plan for Life Now” on WMAL (AM630), Steve has taught regular classes at the University of Phoenix on Retirement Planning. He has also been a regular speaker at multiple government agencies, including the State Department, Department of Agriculture, Department of Labor and the United States Postal Service.
Mr. Killiany graduated from the College of William and Mary Cum Laude, with a BBA concentration in Finance and a minor in Mathematics. In addition, Mr. Killiany was awarded the Wall Street Journal award in Finance, for achieving the highest GPA within his graduating class of Finance.
Steve was born and raised in Fairfax, VA. He currently lives in Gaithersburg, MD with his wife Meghan and daughters Kaitlyn, Emma and Abby.
