Course Description:
In this lecture we will present in-depth discussions of a few clinically useful formulas. We will discuss the formula history including the source text and commentary by practitioners through the centuries. We will examine the individual herbs of each formula and point out the functions that played a role in the construction of the formula (this is related to the understanding of functions of the herbs at the time the formula was invented). Lastly, we will trace the clinical use of the formula through the centuries including modern usage. This latter discussion will include how this formula was used by the teachers I have studied with including Gan Zu Wang, Yu Guo Jun, Zhang Guang Cai and others. The clinical discussions will include information on how to modify the formula to fit various situations.

Objectives:
Students will gain a very thorough understanding of 3-4 formulas that are of considerable clinical usefulness. This includes an understanding of the goals of the formula by its originator and goals and applications that have developed for the formula through the ages.
Students will learn how to modify the formulas in both bulk-herb form and in granule form. This includes understanding how to change the formula as we move from branch treatment to root treatment.
Through discussion of specific formulas students will gain an understanding of how to approach formulas in general and to see formulas as templates that can be modified to fit the unique picture with which each patient presents.

- Introduction to the principles of understanding a formula’s construction and goals through study of its historical use. This will include discussion of one formula and will outline the presenter’s thoughts on moving from branch to root treatment using both bulk herbs and granules.
- Presentation of Formula 2 and its history and clinical use, including modern usage.
- Presentation of Formula 3 and its history and clinical use, including modern usage.
- If time permits, we will present Formula 4 and will leave time for questions.
