About This Webinar

Northumbria University

Northumbria University is a UK public university located in Newcastle upon Tyne, North East of England. It has been a university since 1992, but has its origins in the Rutherford College, founded in 1877.

Building Business Competence

This taster session will focus on making you students for business as well as of business. In an increasingly VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous) world businesses need to be agile and be able to adapt. Consultancy firms help provide professional or expert advice to organisations and businesses. In this session you will act as consultants to a real business located in the North East of England to advise as to how to sustain and develop the company in light of their planned strategic intentions and the ramifications on sales of COVID-19

You will be introduced to a tool kit of models which could be used to support your recommendations.

Please note there will be some work to be completed before the session so that you will get the best out of the event. Once you are registered you will receive the case study a few days before the event so you can come with some ideas on how you would advise the company in this situation.

Consultancy Brief

As a business consultant, you have been asked to advise a SME business as to how to sustain and develop their company in light of their planned strategic intentions and the ramifications on sales of COVID-19.

Prior to making any recommendations, you should try and conduct some basic secondary research into the company and its marketplace to support your suggestions. Some ideas of the type of secondary research you may engage in are detailed below in the reading list. You will receive the case study by email 3 days before the class so you have time to prepare.

You will need to identify three realistic recommendations for the client and bring these to the event. Please note you may be asked to share your recommendations and justify your ideas.

Lecturer

The event is being run by Dr Pam Croney, a senior lecturer at Newcastle Business School, Northumbria. She is a Senior Fellow of the HEA and has worked in a variety of roles within business education for many years as both a practitioner and as an examiner. She recently designed and introduced a new year-long experiential learning module for all first year students at Newcastle Business School.
