Exploring Black Feminist Math Pedagogy as Intersectional Intervention

About This Webinar

Dr. Nicole Joseph introduces a new developing idea related to Black women and girls and mathematics achievement. Specifically, she unpacks a new intersectional intervention that she has coined Black Feminist Mathematics Pedagogy or BlackFMP. BlackFMP is a Black women or girl-centered approach to mathematics teaching in which her intersectional identities are identified, acknowledged and nurtured to promote critical consciousness, robust mathematics identities and high levels of mathematics achievement. Participants use BlackFMP to explore and think though an example.

Nicole M. Joseph is an assistant professor of mathematics and science education in the department of Teaching and Learning at Vanderbilt University. Her research explores two lines of inquiry, (a) Black women and girls, their identity development, and their experiences in mathematics and mathematics education and (b) Whiteness and how it operates and contributes to underrepresentation of Black women and girls in mathematics. Dr. Joseph’s work has been supported by the National Science Foundation and the National Academy of Education/Spencer for which she conducted a historical study about the role of mathematics and science in the education of Blacks during dejure segregation (1837-1957). In addition to having research featured in top-tiered journals, such as the Review of Research in Education, the Journal of Negro Education, and the Journal of Education Policy, Dr. Joseph’s scholarly contributions also includes a co-edited book Interrogating Whiteness and Relinquishing Power: White Faculty’s Commitment to Racial Consciousness in the Classroom (Peter Lang Publishing), a forthcoming book, Mathematizing Feminism: Black Girls’ and Women’s Experiences in the P-20 Mathematics Pipelines (Harvard Education Press), and a new book with Information Age Publishing entitled Understanding the Intersections of Race, Gender, and Gifted Education An Anthology By and About Talented Black Girls and Women in STEM.

Global Math Department webinar platform hosts Exploring Black Feminist Math Pedagogy as Intersectional Intervention
The Global Math Department began as a group of teachers who knew each other through Twitter, math education blogs and Twitter Math Camp. Since 2012 The Global Math Department community has grown into a multi-faceted group of math educators who love to share their ideas related to teaching and learning mathematics. We recognize that as educators we are charged with promoting equity and access within mathematics instruction. In addition, we believe it is crucial that teachers be provided with quality resources and ideas that they can use immediately with their students. Lively and friendly conversations in our weekly webinars encourage all participants to share and continue to grow as educators.
