Hexavalent chromium has been used in the plating industry for about a century. Having been listed as a substance of very high concern (SVHC) in the European Union, its use now requires authorization under REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals).

This classification marked a turning point in the plating industry, which has accelerated the search for alternative plating processes that do not contain hexavalent chromium compounds like chromium trioxide. While Cr(VI)-free chromium processes have been established as viable substitutes in the market for some time due to the additional properties they bring - broader color spectrum and increased corrosion resistance - the introduction of a Cr(VI)-free etching process for plastics has remained a challenge for chemical suppliers for many years.

As a pioneer in the promotion of sustainable technologies, Atotech has invested heavily in the development of Cr(VI)-free technologies. Today, we can offer Covertron®, a production-proven, REACH-compliant, Cr(VI)-free etching process for plastics, already installed at multiple customers around the world. Combined with our well-known TriChrome® family of trivalent chromium plating processes a Cr(VI)-free future for the electroplating industry is a reality within our reach.

In this webinar, Christelle Virion and Dr. Ernesto Salazar will share insights and update you on the very complex situation regarding REACH authorization for chromium trioxide, followed by an introduction of Atotech’s REACH-compliant process solutions for decorative chromium that are available today, concluding with an outlook on the supply chain.

Topics that will be covered in the webinar:

• REACH update
• Atotech processes for decorative Cr(VI)-free chromium plating
- Covertron®
- TriChrome®
• Technical performance
• Field status and outlook
