While program-specific systems engineering solutions can be efficient, their application is often siloed due to a lack of complementary program elements. A laboratory in a predominantly heating environment can benefit from a high-density data center that always requires cooling, but seldom are such programs linked together. Such a symbiotic relationship, however, can lead to significant improvements in energy efficiency. This session will demonstrate how integrated systems engineering can efficiently bridge the gap between complementary program elements while improving resiliency. Katrina Kelly-Pitou, PhD, is an energy systems strategist at SmithGroup in Pittsburgh. Pulling together engineers, computer, and environmental scientists, the Systems group focuses on bridging the gaps between the technical and social development needed to future-proof cities across the globe. Her work focuses specifically on low-carbon and resilient infrastructure designs. In addition to her postdoctoral research in electrical and computer engineering at the University of Pittsburgh, Katrina holds a PhD from the University of Nottingham in energy development studies, a masters in IR and environmental studies from Hult International Business School, and a BA/BSc in economics from Duquesne University. Katrina is a frequent publisher in IEEE, and an affiliate scholar of interdisciplinary studies at Pitt and Nottingham.

Robert Thompson, PE, is a science and technology-focused mechanical engineer and Principal at SmithGroup. Robert supports the Science and Technology studio, the Mission Critical studio, and has worked on projects across the United States. He has written articles for the ASHRAE Journal, Consulting-Specifying Engineer, Engineered Systems, and 7x24 Exchange Magazines. Robert also supports the University of Arizona’s architecture program each fall, highlighting the importance of integrated architecture and engineering.
