This CPD webinar has been organised by the Centre of Excellence in Safety for Older People (CESOP) and the Centre for Remediation, Support and Training (CRST).

In the session, Sir David Behan will discuss how Health Education England can support healthcare professionals, and Professor Ged Byrne will discuss how internationally recruited NHS staff can be supported today and tomorrow.

    Sir David Behan
    Chair, Health Education England
    Sir David Behan began his career as a qualified social worker. He was a Director of Social Services in three local authorities. He was President of the Association of Directors of Social Services.

    Sir David was the first Chief Inspector of the Commission for Social Care Inspection in 2003. In 2006 he was appointed to the Department of Health as the Director General for Social Care, Local Government and Care Partnerships working on personalised care, carers learning and disability policy, mental health policy, the reform of social care funding and legislation. He was a member of the NHS Management Board.

    In 2012 he was appointed to the role of Chief Executive of the Care Quality Commission where he has led a team to conduct a fundamental review of the quality and safety regulation of health and care in England.

    He was awarded a knighthood for services to health and care in the 2017 New Year's Honours list.

    In December 2018 Sir David was appointed as Chair of Health Education England.

    Professor Ged Byrne
    Director of Global Engagement, Health Education England
    Professor Ged Byrne is a surgical oncologist and Director of Global Engagement at Health Education England.

    Professor Byrne is responsible for the enhancement of the NHS workforce through engagement with countries within and outside the EEA. He is a Professor of Medical Education at the UoM, an Honorary Professor of Health Sciences at the University of Salford and was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship by the Higher Education Academy.

    In his roles as Director of Education and Quality for Health Education North West and Director of Education and Quality for HEE North, he has led nationally for HEE on population health and prevention, patient safety and academic development.

    He has a long-standing interest in global healthcare capacity building and education, leading the development of the GuluMan healthcare link and is the founder director of the Uganda-UK Healthcare Alliance. He passionately believes that education must be globalised for all NHS staff if they are to offer a fit for purpose role in the future of healthcare in the UK. He was awarded an MBE in the Queens Birthday Honours in 2019 for global and medical education.

    Chair: Prof Iqbal Singh
    Consultant Physician & Chair, Centre of Excellence in Safety for Older People
    Professor Singh is a consultant physician and Chair of the Centre of Excellence in Safety for Older People (CESOP) and has led on training and education of the workforce within the health and social care sector on issues around improving skills and knowledge and equally focusing on embedding a culture of compassion, dignity and respect.

    He has been a leading contributor to healthcare and medical regulation and as commissioner Health Care Commission and Chair of the Expert Reference Group on Patient Safety with national and international experts, he led the development of criteria indicators for assessment of safety in healthcare. He is also chair of the GMC BME Doctors’ Forum and chaired the GMC’s Equality and Diversity Committee from 2008 – 2012 and founded Diversity Partners. He is a member of the National Platinum Awards Committee and medical vice chair of the Advisory Committee for Clinical Excellence Awards (ACCEA) North West and led the way for stakeholder engagement.

    He is Founder Chair of the Centre for Remediation, Support and Training (CRST), focusing on induction, support mentorship and remediation - helping international graduates successfully integrate into NHS and communities, developing resilience and addressing their mental and physical health and wellbeing.

    He is a member of the Health Honours Committee which advises on nominations for honours in the New Year and Birthday Honours lists and member of the Diversity Inclusion Committee providing oversight on embedding diversity in the Honours system.

    Chair: Mr Gurpreet Singh
    Consultant Urologist & Non-Executive Director, Southport and Ormskirk NHS Trust
    FRCS (G); FRCS (Ed); D. Urol; DNBE; FRCS (Urology); PGC TLCP

    Mr Singh completed his undergraduate education from New-Delhi India and did his post-graduate training in urology with a sub-specialist interest in neuro-urology, in Sheffield. He was appointed a consultant at Southport DGH and the regional Spinal Injuries Unit in 1996. In 2002 he was made an honorary consultant in neuro-urology, for the Walton Centre. He has been responsible for co-authoring national standards for the urological management of spinal cord injury patients and a good urodynamics guidance for the Department of Health.

    Gurpreet’s research interest is in patient safety and clinical priorities in the urological management of the spinal injury patient; and he has over 150 peer reviewed publications. He has also been invited to chair scientific sessions and present at national and international meetings.

    In 2010, Mr Singh was appointed an Associate Postgraduate Dean for Mersey Deanery; and subsequently Health Education North-West. This appointment followed his time as a SAC member in Urology, as the Training programme director in Urology for Mersey. He was the national lead for the e-logbook in Urology. As the Associate Dean, Gurpreet had a pivotal role in setting up trainee revalidation and he was the regional SAS Dean.

    Mr Singh also chaired the Mersey Consultant’s Committee and represented Mersey at CC, nationally. He retired from active NHS practice in February 2017 and continues with private practice and with the GMC where he serves as an enhanced Educational Associate and chairs FtP panels. He also serves as the lead Assessor for NCAS.

    Mr Singh was appointed Non-Executive Director on the board at Southport and Ormskirk NHS Trust in 2018 and his portfolio includes quality and safety.
