Plenary with Liz Marqueiro: Transforming the privileged ELT landscape

The teaching of modern languages originated in the 19th century, a very turbulent one hundred years which saw amongst other things the growth of the British Empire and colonialism. The history of publishing is older still. For example, the structure of Oxford University Press as it exists today began to develop in 1688. It is vital to understand the history so that we can better understand where we are today.

We have come a very long way since then, our ELT methods have adapted and publishing processes have been modernised but are these enough? When you hold up your coursebook in class do your students see their faces and their lives reflected back at them? Do you? Is it important?

The plenary will look at the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion in education generally and ELT in particular. We will explore the challenges faced by publishers, teachers and learners and look at how everyone in the industry can take steps to transform the ELT landscape.
