This introductory workshop will essentially present a hands-on and very practical approach to learning the art of Fukushin, with the aim of introducing participants to the basics of abdominal palpation in the Kampo tradition. The workshop will primarily be of interest to practicing herbalists but anyone with experience and background in East Asian medicine will find the information and practical applications useful.

The workshop will begin with a detailed Powerpoint slide presentation outlining the history and development of Fukushin in Japan up to the present day. The lecture will then introduce the morbid descriptions of each abdominal finding along with their methods of charting. Finally herbal formula associations with each of the findings will be discussed. There will follow a clear practical demonstration of the techniques involved in performing the exam with detailed commentary on methodology, posture and positioning, pressure and other relevant practical considerations. The final part of the lecture will focus on one or two case studies designed to illustrate the direct application and importance of Fukushin in the clinic.
