This curated three-part virtual lecture series from historian and author Emma Griffin will explore the lives of people in Britain during the Victorian age. From the opportunities and perils wrought by the industrial revolution to the host of new social and sexual freedoms of the era, this masterclass promises to offer many insights into a fascinating period.

Men and the Industrial Revolution

We are used to thinking that the industrial revolution had a negative effect on the lives of working men – that their work became harder, more monotonous and more regimented. But evidence from the writings of men suggests that the reality might be more complicated and that higher wages brought significant benefits that need to be acknowledged.

The session will include an introductory lecture, discussion of a document picked by Emma, and an extensive Q&A.
