"The Sprinkler System Has Activated" - What Does The Incident Commander Do?

We have minimal experience in buildings where the sprinkler bell is ringing on the outside indicating water is flowing. A water flow alarm should be treated differently than a general fire alarm. Because fire alarms with actual fire sprinkler system activation have been rare in the past, they are becoming more common because there has been a 70% increase in the number of buildings being protected with fire sprinklers. firefighters can become complacent in their actions when general fire alarms are involved, but they shouldn’t. The activation no matter how or why requires a proactive response with the attitude that there is a fire until I can say there is not a fire or that the fire is under control and extinguished, which all three are different. The public expects the men and women arriving on the fire truck to solve their problem and the owners of the building have invested in fixed fire protection systems to protect their property and keep the occupant, workers, and firefighters safe. He received the Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels Meritorious Service Award. The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2022 he received the Jimmy Seavey Health and Wellness award presented by the NVFC. and the Presidents Award from the International Society of Fire Service Instructors.
He was one of the founders of the Volunteer and Combination Officer Section (VCOS) and the National Fire Academy Alumni Association. He has contributed to several “ribbon reports” published by the VCOS. He was asked to be one of the editors for the original Lavender Ribbon Report published by the VCOS and NVFC in 2019. In 2021 he along with Brian McQueen spearheaded the update for the Lavender Ribbon Report. He is a principal author of the Yellow Ribbon Report and the updated updated Training Volunteers white paper published by the National Volunteer Fire Council and the Volunteer and Combination Officers Section.
