The pervasiveness of social media in young people’s lives is widely acknowledged; yet, there is little evidence-based understanding of the impacts of social media on young people’s health and wellbeing. This session draws on novel research to understand, explain and illustrate young people’s experiences of engagement with health-related social media, and the impacts they report on their health, wellbeing and physical activity. Using case studies, digital representations, and evidence from multi-sector and multi-disciplinary stakeholders and academics, the session will identify the opportunities and risk-related impacts of social media and will help physical educators to make informed decisions about if, when, and how to support young people in their engagement with social media, and how social media might be used to support and extend learning in PE contexts.
