India: Decoding The Next Big Beauty Market

About This Webinar

The battle for the $14 billion Indian beauty market is heating up with a deluge of homegrown beauty brands. These startups are tapping into the country's burgeoning middle class, geographically diverse with cultural and regional preferences and widely divergent purchasing power. The Good Glamm Group is one of these dynamic startups. The Content-to-commerce conglomerate furthered its ambition of becoming India's largest CPG company by building a "digital Unilever" at the end of last year with $150 million in funding at a $1.2 billion valuation and a flurry of M&A activity.

The Good Glam Group co-founders join BeautyMatter founder Kelly Kovack to talk about the Indian consumer and what makes the market tick.

Group Founder & CEO, Good Glamm Group
Darpan Sanghvi is the Group Founder and CEO of Good Glamm Group - South Asia’s
Largest Content to Commerce Conglomerate.

The Good Glamm Group comprises a portfolio of proprietary beauty & personal care brands
that are powered by its digital ecosystem of content, community, and creator assets. Beauty &
personal care brands owned by the Good Glamm Group include MyGlamm (India’s fastest
growing cosmetics brand), The MomsCo (India’s leading premium mom and baby brand),
POPxo (India’s first tween cosmetics brand), and Baby Chakra (India’s first baby products
brand co-created with mothers). These brands leverage Good Glamm Group’s proprietary
digital assets, which comprise of POPxo (India’s largest female content platform with 88
million users), ScoopWhoop (India’s largest male content platform with 100 million users),
BabyChakra (India’s leading parenting platform with 20 million mothers and a network of
10,000 doctors) and Plixxo (India’s leading creator and influencer management platform with
220,000 influencers on boarded).

Darpan’s entrepreneurial journey began in 2010 when he acquired the master franchise of
L’Occitane Spas & Clarins Spas among many other globally acclaimed beauty brands and
launched them in India. It was there where Darpan realised that there was a large unmet
opportunity to create beauty products made specifically for the Indian consumer with
insights given by the Indian consumer, using the power of being Direct to Consumer and
leveraging Digital and Data. And that is how MyGlamm was born in Oct 2017.  In 2019
MyGlamm grew 400%, but then revenues came to a screeching halt, down to zero, during the
lockdown in the Covid pandemic in 2020.

While revenues were down to zero, Darpan went on to make some bold moves - he acquired
POPxo, India’s largest online community of women with 88 million female users, to
exponentially increase MyGlamm’s digital reach - and at the same time doubled down on
offline retail expansion by increasing MyGlamm point of sales to 10,000 (from 500 point of
sales pre-Covid) while also opening India’s largest beauty experience store in Mumbai.
Today the group has 30,000 points of sales.

These moves paid off, as MyGlamm came out of Covid with revenues that were 200% of pre-
Covid levels while also achieving EBITDA profitability. It also made MyGlamm the fastest
beauty brand to cross the $100mil valuation in just three years of launch. In August 2021, he
acquired leading parenting platform Baby Chakra to further expand in the Mom-baby care
segment in beauty and personal care.

While building MyGlamm, Darpan has attracted not only some of the best global financial
investors such as Warburg Pincus, Prosus Ventures (Naspers), Bessemer Venture Partners,
Accel but is the only beauty brand to get A list brands like L’Occitane and Amazon to invest,
which have significantly accelerated and shortened the learning curve that MyGlamm has
had.

In November 2021, Good Glamm Group entered the Unicorn club with a valuation of
approximately $1.2 billion in a $150 million fund raising round led by Prosus Ventures
(Naspers) and Warburg Pincus.

Darpan is a mechanical engineer from Pune, following which he pursued a dual MBA from
ESADE Business School Barcelona & University of Texas at Austin. Prior to his MBA,
Darpan was the youngest manager at Baazee.com (acquired by Ebay) and post his MBA
Darpan worked at the $5 billion Celanese Chemicals where he led strategy projects across
Dallas, Singapore, and New York. An entrepreneur at heart, Darpan moved back to India in
2008, to start his own venture, recognizing that there was a dearth of brands in India and
there was an opportunity to build a significant brands business in India.
