Join us for an online discussion about the opportunities and challenges offered by community-scale batteries in Australia’s national electricity market.
Community-scale batteries are those located in front of the meter on the distribution network, whether owned by community energy groups, networks, retailers or other parties. They are larger than household but smaller than grid-scale batteries. They may have economic and energy equity advantages over household batteries due to the potential for economies of scale; shared ownership or utilisation; and for different stakeholders to access multiple value streams. Or they may complement individual batteries used for solar self-consumption and aggregated in virtual power plants. However, there are financial, regulatory and consumer issues that need to be addressed before they can be rolled out widely across the NEM.
There are several studies which are nearing completion which address these issues. There are also several networks, retailers and governments which are in various stages of trialling community scale batteries in the field.
This introductory webinar is an opportunity to hear about both the modelling projects and some pilot projects. It is likely to be followed a week or so later by more specialised webinars focusing on technical modelling, social research and regulatory reform.
Brought to you jointly by the Energy Security Board, the Battery Storage and Grid Integration Program (ANU), Ausgrid and the Total Environment Centre.
