Plenary with Jane Setter: English pronunciation for the 21st century
English is an international language which belongs to everyone who speaks it, whether they have acquired it from birth or learned it later in life. It is part of the identity of the speaker. This means international intelligibility in English and the development of accommodation skills are vital, bringing the importance of pronunciation teaching and learning strongly to the fore in the ELT classroom.
In this talk, I argue that the primary goal for pronunciation teaching must be international intelligibility, as this equips the learner with the pronunciation skills they need for essential communication and requires them to focus on specific features central to success in speaking. I also look at the strengths of non-native speakers in the teaching of pronunciation and ask you to consider what your beliefs are about your own pronunciation skills and accent, and how this affects your teaching.
