Social tipping points, moments when shifts in behavior, norms, policies, technologies, or institutions become self-reinforcing, are attracting growing attention in sustainability science. Positive tipping dynamics may help accelerate decarbonization, nature regeneration, and more sustainable patterns of production and consumption. At the same time, negative social tipping dynamics, including misinformation, polarization, backlash, and institutional instability, can slow or derail collective action.

This Cell Press Sustainability Forum will bring together leading scholars to discuss what is known, what remains uncertain, and how social tipping dynamics can be governed in just and resilient ways. The discussion will consider how collective change emerges across social-ecological systems, how researchers and policymakers might identify windows of opportunity, and how rapid transformations can avoid shifting harms onto already vulnerable communities.
